Is a new bio-based leather alternative that is high performance, circular, and has ‘Made in Italy’ quality. It is also vegan and cruelty-free.
How it’s made
Apple leather is created by using apple waste (that is otherwise discarded to landfills) recovered from the fruit juice and compote industry (including stems, seeds, apple peels and fibers). It is then processed into cellulose powder and combined with polyurethane on cotton fabric to form the new material. Originating from Bolzano in northern Italy, it is made using 50% apple waste and 50% PU.
The result is a waterproof, durable, and soft fabric that is perfect for your every-day-carry (EDC). It is also vegan and completely cruelty-free.
Continuous innovation is on-going in the manufacturing process of apple leather, such as by incorporating organic textiles, recycled fibers (polyester from water bottles, recycled cotton, recycled polyamide), and using natural pigments. The target is a 100% circular product in the near future.
The manufacturing process goes something like this (including how it’s upcycled):
Why We Love It
Apart from their tasty properties, we chose AppleSkin™ because it is an attractive, high-performing, sustainable, and cruelty-free alternative to leather (do we need more reasons?). Thanks to these qualities, it is perfect for our EDC and can really be a part of our general lifestyle.
While we believe that organising work and home space is an important step in refocusing on our passions, it is equally vital to do so in a way that improves our planet if it is within our capability to do so.
Just like these apples, we’re also on the journey of reorganising waste materials and turning them into something far better.
